Most Disappointing Reads of 2021

It’s inevitable that you can’t win ‘em all.
I know my reading tastes pretty darn well so I don’t go into a book expecting to dislike it. If I am going to read a book, I at least expect it to be a 3-star read. This is a rating a know will give me solid entertainment and a story and characters I can get on board with. Anything below that though, is a bit of a flop for me.
Throughout this year, I have managed to read the most books that I can recall. My average tend to be around 50 but I blew that number out of the water somehow haha. This also inevitably means that my ratio of likes and dislikes will be higher than an average year.
Before I list the books, I am just going to say that I do not have any of these in here out of malice. These are just books that did not jive with me like they may for others. If your favourite book is on this list, I am happy that you found joy in it where I did not. Thoughts on books exist in a spectrum and it is great to see all points of view.
With that being said, let’s get to the books (in order of when I read them):
Prudence by Gail Carriger
The Wallflower Wager by Tessa Dare
The Map of Time by Felix J. Palma
Legendary by Stephanie Garber
Gods Behaving Badly by Marie Phillips
The Two Swords by K.J. Parker
The Memory of Fire by Callie Bates
The Revenant Express by George Mann
Things in Jars by Jess Kidd
The Last Dance of the Debutante by Julia Kelly
The Last She by H.J. Nelson
Royal Assassin by Robin Hobb
The Road Trip by Beth O’Leary
These are all books that I rated below a 3-star and/or DNF’d and had high expectations for.
As of right now (December 20th) I have 18 on this list and have 110 listed on Goodreads for total read this year (including the DNF’s). That means my percentage of disappointing reads is about 16%. I think an 84% success rate is pretty good though!
How did your reading go this year? Did you have many that were disappointing?
Until next time, keep reading!
